Chicha De La Piedmont EP Release

Funny thing is I wrote a piece in the press kit for this EP a couple of months ago. Matthew Mansfield is the man behind the curtain that is Piper Street Sound. Matthew may spend most of his energy on dub recordings but over the course of last summer he produced a Chicha influenced album. Inspired by Peruvian and Colombian Cumbia with the help of ahem yours truly (Sexxy Saturday Cumbia – Generation Bass) and a chance meeting with Chancha Via Circuito, Matt brought his superb recording engineer skills along with his diverse instrumental talent into the mix for his new EP Chicha De La Piedmont.

Often I am sent requests to review productions from many different producers and DJ’s all over the globe. I respectfully respond to every single one but only get around to writing a review for a small handful that strike my fancy and are in the bounds of the necessary genre. To say the least this time in particular was an honor and a pleasure, because this time it was for Matthew Mansfield of Piper Street Sound with his new EP Chicha De La Piedmont.

Mastering the world of cumbia, dub and even drum and bass, the album will not only appeal to and excite your senses but will warm your soul. The title track alone fuses dub and cumbia in a seamless marriage with a strong powerful melody and guitar solo which to me sounds to have an influence from old western cinema.

The sound differs with the rest of the tracks on the EP which go further into the scene of fusion involving not only cumbia and dub but more urban elements of sound. One thing is for certain, this EP won’t disappoint even the most open of minds.

I get the opportunity to meet many interesting artists, producers and DJ’s from around the world. I choose to write about people and work that I know will inspire and excite my ever-growing loyal readers. Matthew Mansfield is such an artist. Not only is he a talented producer that truly knows his craft and the history of the music involved but he is also a talented musician which makes it even more pleasurable for me. He never ceases to impress me with his productions and I have faith he never will
