Explosion Negra is the perfect blend of Afro-Colombian sounds mixed with hip hop and dancehall. They reside in Medellin, Colombia where their various rhythmic influences come from and are quite apparent through their music. Going in and out of different styles in the period of one song is their strength and by which makes them unique.
Check out their well produced video of Madre Selva which has a strong Afro and dancehall influenced style.
Starting with a more cumbia based sound this next song quickly changes to a modern dancehall sound.
This next one is my favorite of theirs bringing traditional cumbia together with hip hop and dancehall.
I like the use of traditional live percussion sounds with modern drum machines. Take this beautiful jazzy porro cumbia and how they keep it throughout but bring in the dancehall aesthetic.
This video brings a similar style of porro with dancehall and hip hop.
The rhythm in this last one is really intoxicating. It’s offbeat and I’m a huge fan of offbeat rhythms. It also has a dope chanting intro and outro.
Explosion Negra is planned to be touring the U.S. this spring and as soon as I can I’ll have dates edited in right here.
